Slackware brings XMMS back
13, Sep, 2008I couldn’t be happier. I don’t have issues with Amarok, but sometimes I just need to play a single file, without the need to open my whole audio database. Not going to touch everything that’s wrong with Audacious. Let’s just say 1.5x is no where as good as 1.4x series.
+--------------------------+ Thu Sep 11 16:02:24 CDT 2008 xap/xmms-1.2.11-i486-1.tgz: Added xmms-1.2.11. This is an audio player that is similar to audacious, but uses about a third of the CPU power. Please note that "doublesize" mode seems broken -- if it is enabled, XMMS will crash, and then will not start again until $HOME/.xmms is cleared out. Any patch for this issue would be appreciated. +--------------------------+
Knew I had a patch, so I sent it in. Here’s my 5 seconds of fame. It actually feels good to see my name as part of something I use and so cherish as Slackware. Wish it was for something more than simply forwarding a patch I dug up somewhere on the Internet a few years ago. I seriously doubt Pat decided to include xmms just because I posted I like it better than audacious. It’s nice to think that, but I know it isn’t true. Being a reader of a.o.l.s, there was a few posts proclaiming how they missed xmms as well, long before I made my gripe. Great minds do think alike.
+--------------------------+ Fri Sep 12 17:26:34 CDT 2008 xap/xmms-1.2.11-i486-2.tgz: Patched to fix the doublesize option. Thanks to Patryk Krawaczynski, Keith Richie, and Catalin Tomozei for all sending in the same working patch. Honorable mentions to LukenShiro, misiu, and Willy Sudiarto Raharjo for proposing "XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 xmms" as another possible workaround for the problem. +--------------------------+
