KDE 4.1.1 hits Slackware -current
2, Oct, 2008I’ve never been a huge fan of KDE. Wasn’t my thing. It’s not just KDE, it’s anything with the QT 3.x tool kit. Personally I’ve always used one of the GTK desktop environments like Xfce and Gnome, and sometimes Fluxbox. With KDE’s move to the QT 4 series, and doing some serious platform changes, I have to say - I like what I’m seeing.
The recent releases of KDE 4.0, 4.1, and 4.1.1 have not been stable nor feature complete. Unlike most people, I do recall how long it took KDE to stabilize the 3.x platform. KDE 3.8 was, IIRC, when I would really consider running KDE in a production setting. Though at the pace KDE is moving currently, compared to then, I see the 4.x series becoming worthy sometime between the 4.4 and 4.5 releases. It’s understandable all the die hard KDE 3.x fans hate KDE 4.x. I hate the KDE 3 series, and love KDE 4. I’m not sure what these old KDE users will do in the future though. There’s really not a comparable Desktop to the KDE 3 series.
All this is just history repeating itself. No one likes change. Doesn’t matter the OS either. Everyone freaked out 10 years ago with the change from Windows 98/2000 into Windows XP. I’ve read the same complaints about the changes between XP and Vista. Makes me wonder what happened to the human characteristic of adapt and overcome?
